ACT ONE "A Chip in the Sugar" by Alan Bennett
Mild, middle-aged Graham Whittaker finds life becoming complicated as his aged mother, with whom he still lives, reunites with an old flame named Frank Turnbull. Graham becomes increasingly jealous when Mr. Turnbull takes an ever-growing hold on "Mam," especially when Frank proposes marriage while simultaneously suggesting Graham moves out of the house. But Mr. Turnbull is hiding a secret, and when Graham finds out he triumphantly confronts his mother with the information, restoring the status quo and his comfortable life but destroying her hopes of happiness in the process. But Graham has secrets of his own... And who is really taking care of whom in the Whittaker household?
ACT TWO "Bust" by Lauren Weedman
Bust makes witty use of a title that conflates feminine cleavage and an encounter with the penal system—perfectly suited for a play that contrasts making it big time in Los Angeles with doing time in a women's prison. Lauren Weedman’s semiautobiographical play Bust tracks her volunteer work with "Friends Outside," an organization providing emotional support to female prison inmates, while she maneuvers her way as an actress/writer through the superficiality of Hollyweird. Jennifer Price portrays a galaxy of characters, all vividly evoked as she meets her fellow volunteers, penetrates the labyrinth of the prison system, provides solace to a twitchy meth addict, confronts an editor at Glamour, and braves the banter of the women's sauna after having lunch at one of L.A.’s trendiest spots. |
